Cowboy Hat Sizing Guide

How to Measure Your Head for the Perfect Hat Fit

Getting the right fit starts with one simple measurement. All you need is a flexible measuring tape, or a piece of string and a ruler.

What You'll Need

  • A soft measuring tape, or
  • A thin piece of string + a ruler

Step 1 – Measure Your Head Circumference

Wrap the tape around your head about 1 inch (2.5 cm) above your ears, across your forehead and around the fullest part of the back of your head. Keep it snug but not tight; you should be able to slip one finger underneath.

Step 2 – Note Your Measurement

Write down your measurement in inches and centimeters. If using string, mark the overlap point and measure the length against a ruler.

Step 3 – Find Your Size

Size Head Circumference (in) Head Circumference (cm)
Small 21⅛" – 21⅞" 53.7 – 55.6 cm
Medium 21⅞" – 22½" 55.6 – 57.2 cm
Large 22½" – 23¼" 57.2 – 59.1 cm
X-Large 23¼" – 24" 59.1 – 61.0 cm

Between sizes? Size up. A hat that's slightly loose can be adjusted with a hat size reducer strip (foam or leather tape inside the sweatband). A hat that's too small cannot be stretched without risking damage.

How Brims & Bolos Maps Your Measurement to a Custom Hat

When you place a custom hat order, we use your head circumference measurement to shape and block your hat to your size. Because each hat is handcrafted, minor variation (±⅛") is normal and expected.

Please note: hat sizing can vary slightly by style, brim shape, and material (felt vs. straw). Your measurement is our starting point, not a universal fit guarantee; final fit may vary based on the hat's construction.

Tips for a Better Fit

  • Measure at the end of the day when your head is at its largest.
  • Measure 2–3 times and use the average.
  • If your head is between sizes, size up and use a hat size reducer for a snug fit.
  • Hats naturally break in over time and may loosen slightly with wear.
